Wisesport’s AI portfolio

In December 2025, we finally launched our cutting-edge, one-of-a-kind portfolio of AI-based services.

Coach’s challenge and goal camera

This season, we introduced two long-awaited services: a coach’s challenge video tool and a goal camera interface.

By integrating cutting-edge camera technology into the Wisesport platform, we created a system that makes games and refereeing fairer and more transparent. The new tools were trialed by our partner leagues and are now in permanent use in partner leagues, including the Finnish Hockey League Liiga.

Coaches asked, we provided: Game Center

Our new Game Center gives coaches the data they want. We interviewed ice hockey professionals to create a statistics page with easy access, simple usability, and the most important data visualized.

Now the Wisesport analytics platform’s Game Center provides valuable insights into upcoming and previous games. It allows coaches to focus on what is essential and spend less time and energy searching for details from large amounts of data.

The Game Center includes shot and pass statistics, scoring chances, faceoffs, powerplays, and video clips of all events. With just a click, you also get an in-depth AI analysis based on the previous five or ten games.

Wisesport’s fully automated, real-time football analytics platform was installed at the Eerikkilä Training Center, the home of the Finnish national football (soccer) teams and player development, in 2020. Using the Wisesport platform year-round, the center tracks players and the ball in almost 600 games a year.

“The [Wisesport] data doesn’t stay only with us [at Eerikkilä] and the Football Association, but clubs are able to use it for club, team, and individual analysis. At the club level, they can analyze if they are going in the right direction and follow the metrics they choose. At the team level, they can analyze if a single team is approaching its goal. At the individual level, they also get personalized data about every player,” said Antti Kekkonen, the Head of Eerikkilä’s Football Services in the Football Association of Finland’s press release on 8 April.

Based on data collected by the Wisesport platform for years, the Football Association and Eerikkilä have been able to monitor the performance of Finnish teams compared to the international level. The data shows improvement and also helps to analyze the elements behind the results.

“Concrete data makes it easier to create a shared picture of how a sports event went and how to continue everyday practice. That makes Wisesport an extremely valuable partner for us,” said Markus Paananen, Research and Development Manager at the Football Association of Finland, in the same press release.

The Wisesport platform processes analytics automatically and in real time. This allows coaches and players to view and use valuable data immediately during and after a game.

In addition to football, Wisesport operates in ice hockey and basketball. There is a lot of synergy between the sports: the basic elements, such as passing and scoring chances, are found in all of them, but they also have special features. Active collaboration with sports organizations is an important part of the development of a robust and reliable real-time analytics platform.

1. Keep an eye out for Wisesport’s AI-powered real-time statistics in new places: we’ve expanded to Finland’s second-highest men’s ice hockey league Mestis, U20 national league and women’s Auroraliiga, as well as Metal Ligaen in Denmark and the Swedish SDHL. Hockey clubs and fans alike will certainly benefit from the new analytics partnerships!

2. Wisesport is scaling up like never before: With five new partner leagues at once, our fully automated real-time sports analytics platform is installed in over 40 new arenas just for the 2025–2026 ice hockey season!

3. Wait, was that an offside?! We launched the Wisesport Coach’s Challenge camera tool in Liiga in Finland. Starting from day one of the 2025–2026 season, Liiga clubs’ coaches have been able to challenge goals for offside using Wisesport’s new camera service. Learn more in Liiga’s article.

4. Talking about goals, we now make identifying scored goals easier for referees. The EliteHockey Ligaen in Norway started using Wisesport’s Goal-line Camera to clarify unclear cases. More reliability, less controversy.

5. As an IIHF partner, Wisehockey attended the IIHF Global Hockey Forum in Nice on Sept 30 – Oct 1. It was a fantastic event to network with ice hockey enthusiasts and discuss new trends, such as the rise of AI in sports analytics. Learn more in the IIHF’s article.

KalPa excelled on all fronts in Liiga

The Finnish Hockey League’s champion 2024/25 KalPa reached the highest place for the first time in the history of the club, and not without merit. The team excelled on many aspects of the game, performing better than most of the other playoff teams in almost all 5v5 statistics shown in the radar chart below.

PENNY DEL’s Eisbären Berlin specialized in effective rushes

A familiar name on the list of championship winners, Eisbären Berlin from the German PENNY DEL took another trophy in this year’s finals. The team’s performance excelled in certain areas, including generating high rush xG (expected goals), making successful controlled entries and effectively reducing their opponent’s xG after take-aways.

Storhamar dominated game in EHL

Storhamar from the Norwegian EliteHockey Ligaen won another championship with style. Their performance in all statistics shown in the performance radar below exceeded other playoff teams.

The story began last spring when PENNY DEL auctioned smart pucks used to score goals in the final series. The total sum of 12,000 euros was raised to support German youth hockey.

The auctioned pucks came with Wisehockey’s original Puck Biographies. Via unique QR codes, the new owners can view all the fascinating details of the puck’s life: how fast the best shots were, which team and players had possession of the puck for the longest time, a video clip of the goal scored with the puck, and much more.

Puck Biography makes unique bits of hockey analytics available to the loyal fan. Using analytics and digitalization, it takes traditional game memorabilia to the next level like never seen before.

The thrilling Awards will culminate on 23 April in London when the winners are announced.

The importance of hockey analytics in the modern game is ever-increasing. “The ability to assess team performances and recognize trends, strengths, and weaknesses cannot be underestimated, whether on a team or individual player level. The analytics we compile are important to the coaching staff because they can make crucial tactical and personnel decisions with them,” explains Stéphane Richer, Sports Director at the DEL club Eisbären Berlin.

The traditional way of collecting hockey statistics means people monitor the game and write down data. Some digital solutions have been available, but they also require time to produce the output and humans to calculate the more advanced statistics. This also gives way to human error, as every person views the game differently.

Wisehockey works automatically and in real time

Wisehockey offers an alternative to the problem of slowness and human subjectivity in sports statistics. With a fully automated and real-time digital analytics platform, teams and leagues receive a massive amount of data immediately, which was impossible before.

“Statistics are a central element of ice hockey. The same standards are applied in every arena for automated data collection, which makes the data truly comparable,” explains Gernot Tripcke, Managing Director of PENNY DEL. Because the Wisehockey analytics platform collects and processes data in the same way everywhere, the statistics are more comparable than if collected by hand.

“We were also impressed by the amount of data collected. This offers countless innovative opportunities for the teams and the league to improve and further develop our product. In the end, Wisehockey convinced us with their hockey knowledge and the reliability of the application,” Tripcke continues.

Wisehockey offers highly advanced statistics that are extremely difficult or impossible to calculate by hand. For instance, the platform calculates xG (expected goals) and EPV (expected possession value) using dozens of variables in real time. Some statistics are simple in theory but still impossible for the human eye to catch like player and puck speeds, real-time time on ice, and many live pass statistics.

Benefits to decision-making, entertainment, and marketing

PENNY DEL, the clubs, and media partners also use statistics to create new kinds of content for entertainment and marketing. This makes fan engagement via arena screens, social media, and other channels more efficient. “We sold some statistics to our sponsors and display them during the game on the video wall. We show, for example, the hardest shot or what distance a player covered during a period. Additionally, head-to-head stats before the game are used to show the ‘players to watch’ to the arena spectators,” says Charly Fliegauf, Sports Director of Grizzlys Wolfsburg.

The data also plays a significant role at the league level and in sports broadcasts. “Wisehockey data is used in the TV productions of our partner Magenta Sport. The service for fans is being successively expanded. For the commentators behind the camera, the live data provides valuable information that can be used in live reporting,” Gernot Tripcke remarks.

“We incorporate the findings of the newly acquired data into our decision-making processes. For us as a league, the topics of entertainment and marketing are particularly relevant. We can break new ground in our digitalization strategy and tap into additional sources of revenue,” saysJörg von Ameln, the Director of Hockey Operations and Sustainability at PENNY DEL.

“We also collect data from our referees, which provides our referee coaches with valuable information for their training sessions. From a Hockey Operations perspective, Wisehockey makes it much easier for us to evaluate the games live in our ‘Game Center’ where all games are monitored and logged live and during the follow-up process,” von Ameln adds.

Easy daily routines and satisfied users

The Wisehockey platform is effortless to operate and requires light and affordable equipment. Locators are installed around the rink, and the match clock is integrated with the analytics platform.

The daily routine is simple: make sure you’re using a smart puck and players are wearing their tracking tags when the match starts. Everything else works fully automatically in a cloud environment.

“We at Eisbären Berlin have used Wisehockey data from the onset in our day-to-day analytics assessments. The data help us compile accurate and in-depth assessments of the team performance, both in-game and over set periods of the season,” explains Stéphane Richer. “Wisehockey is an extremely useful tool for real-time analytics and player assessment. The real-time xG progression, team momentum, and puck battle charts are a welcome feature,” he concludes.

In Grizzlys Wolfsburg, the feelings are similar. “[The Wisehockey platform] helped us to analyze the game in general and the individual performances. In the short time between periods, it also helps us show some individual plays to the players. The player stats during games like shots on net, xG, time on ice, face-offs or shifts give us coaches and the management some short-term information about the individual player performance,” says Mike Stewart, Head Coach of Grizzlys Wolfsburg.

Penny DEL breaking records

This season, Penny DEL attracted a record-breaking number of spectators.

• Kölner Haie (Cologne) home games attracted an average of 16,993 spectators during the regular season. This not only shattered the club’s record, club also marked the highest attendance since 2017 for European hockey.
• Other clubs also performed admirably in the regular season. The average number of spectators in DEL reached 7,162, setting an all-time record for a European league.
• In addition, DEL’s television partner MagentaSport achieved a new viewer record. The reach of the regular season’s live broadcasts increased by 20%.

The interest in German ice hockey is experiencing tremendous growth. Fans engage with their favorite teams and players through various channels, including digital. The Wisehockey platform has become an essential tool in the DEL clubs’ everyday operations.

New records for Liiga and its finalist

Finland’s national hockey league, Liiga, also shattered records during this season.

• Liiga broke a spectator record for the first time in a decade. Attendance during the regular season grew by 5.4% from the previous season. Each match boasted an average of 4,568 spectators.
• The total number of spectators surpassed two million, which was last achieved in the 2013–2014 season.
• One of Liiga’s finalists, Tappara, attracted the highest number of spectators to its home games. The average of 8,494 attendees broke the club’s all-time record. Tappara has reached the finals for the third consecutive year.

Liiga was an early adopter of Wisehockey’s fully automated real-time sports analytics platform. They integrated the analytics system into their league-wide operations as early as 2019.

Increase in spectators in EliteHockey Ligaen

The Norwegian EliteHockey Ligaen (EHL) experienced an exhilarating season as well, having already come to a close with the triumph of Storhamar over Vålerenga in the finals.

• By the turn of the new year, EHL witnessed a 20% increase in spectators compared to the situation one year earlier. The average number of spectators per match grew to 2,058.
• A new single-game spectator record was set in Lillehammer during the Hockey Classic with 10,348 attendees.

Interest in televised broadcasts of EHL games has also been growing. Wisehockey provides live data and statistics for the EHL match broadcasts as well as for DEL and Liiga.
